PARISH SCHOOLS FOR REFUGEES In order to meet the continuing influx and needs of the refugee community, Sacred Heart Church has established these educational centres in Cairo over the past few years. St. LWANGE CENTRE -a school for Sudanese refugee and displaced children has been operating at the Sacred Heart Church since 1990. It serves around 600 children from different ethnic, tribal and religious background and employs 30 Sudanese teachers and a Sudanese doctor. It opens 5 days per week and follows the first 10 grades from Kindergarten to the Intermediate level of the Egyptian national curriculum, which is taught in Arabic. Its main aim is to contribute to the improvement of the educational levels and to encourage the personal growth and healthy development of the school children. St. BAKHITA CENTRE FOR BASIC EDUCATION, located in the district of Arbaa wy Nus, serves 500 students and employs 25 refugee teachers. It was opened in 2000. In 2004, the Trinitarian Fathers took over the responsibility of the centre. St. JOSEPH'S CENTRE FOR BASIC EDUCATION, located in the district of Maadi, serves 250 students and employs 18 refugee teachers. This school adopts the same educational curriculum as St. Lwanga. CANOSSIAN EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL CENTRE opened in 2004 in the district of Zeitun and provides education to 80 children at the kindergarten and grade 1 levels and employs 6 refugee teachers. The Canossian Sisters run the centre. Fr. PHILIP SINA SECONDARY SCHOOL was established in 2003 to provide secondary education to Sudanese refugee children who had completed the intermediate level and who could not access Egyptian secondary schools. Presently, total of 80 students are enrolled in the secondary school program taught by 12 Sudanese teachers.
